ANALYSIS: Just because that was the first fact that I personally checked, and you’re probably wondering if you don’t already know; Atlanta Braves wide receiver William Contreras is the younger (and much less vaunted) brother of the Cubs Willson Contreras, around six years old. William watched Willson turn into a solid two-time All-Star as the Cubbies’ safety net, and he’s on course to carve out a place in the majors.
Braves fans saw Contreras for just 10 AB in 2020, hitting three singles and a double in an extremely limited, but successful sample size. Travis d’Arnaud controlled the receiver position in Atlanta last year in the midst of his Silver Slugger campaign, but it is now William’s spectacle after Arnaud hit the 60-day IL in early May, and while as blue chipper Shea Langeliers is Atlanta’s third-best prospect, he’s a 53 AB single in his first Double-A stint. In William’s 59 MLB AB in 2021, he has already collected twelve points, fifteen RBIs, seven XBHs (one double, one triple, five HR) and a slash of .237 / .343 / .542. He hits at a rate of 31.4% (which is not unusual for a relative newcomer), but he talks about the marches at a rate of 11.4% and he hits for a hard touch of 54.1%. at an average speed of 92.8 MPH. Inconsistent opportunity slowed him down on his minor league ascent (much like his brother), but when he put it all together he proved to be an exceptionally versatile and disciplined stick for the backstop. William Contreras threw a wide net on offense, and with the stat hitting bonus in one of baseball’s strongest orders, he’s a very attractive acquisition in the mid-size leagues.
