  1. Silverton Mountain, CO

Correctly described as “a unique mountain experience,“Silverton works like no other ski resort in the United States Silverton Mountain has been owned and operated by Aaron and Jenny Brill since January 19, 2002, when they purchased a chairlift from Mammoth Mountain and opened. Known for its steep slopes, this mountain is definitely for experts. And with its incredible access to backcountry options, including hiking and heli-skiing options, the potential leans towards limitless.

Skiing experience

The ski industry changes every year. New technology. New designs. New equipment. You name it. And the ski resorts change too. You see improvements in customer services, amenities, and online conveniences across the country. But what rarely seems to change is the skiing experience itself.

As difficult as it is to define a list of “upcoming” ski areas, we have chosen to identify those that are showing signs of ambitious advancement and development of the real skiing experience. While no roster is perfect, and this one certainly lacks one, we’re thrilled to share a very fine collection of candidates. We hope you enjoy reading.

The Big Bear and Snow Summit ski areas in California are currently at risk from the Radford Fire which started around 1:30 p.m. yesterday (Monday September 5). The cause is still unknown.
