Pune Mountaineering Club, Giripremi, Announce Mount Meru Expedition

Based in Pune, Giripremi, the country’s premier mountaineering club, has planned an ambitious expedition up Mount Meru, a 6,660m mountain in the Garhwal-Himalayas.

Shipping is scheduled for August-September 2023.

The team of experienced climbers will attempt the summit from the South West Ridge, a route that has never been attempted by an Indian team before.

The Giripremi team will become the first Indian team to climb Mount Meru, if they make it to the top.

To date, Giripremi climbers have summited eight of the fourteen highest mountains in the world, including Mount Everest, Mount Kanchenjunga and Mount Annapurna. Additionally, the club’s team of climbers unfurled the Indian tricolor on Mount Manda, a demanding mountain in the Indian Himalayas in 2021.

All of these expeditions were led by Umesh Zirpe – and the veteran will also lead the Mount Meru Expedition.

“Giripremi is known for its 8,000 meter peaks. In the space of 10 years, climbers in Giripremi have deployed the Indian tricolor on eight eight-thousand mountains and proven their skills. Now we want to focus more on the mountains located in the Indian Himalayas and just as difficult as eight thousand. We used to organize expeditions in such mountains, but this time we want to set the bar high by climbing the most difficult mountains in the world like Mount Meru,” Zirpe said. .

According to him, the South West Ridge presents several challenges but the team of experienced mountaineers will surely overcome all the challenges to reach the summit and return safely to the base camp.

The summit of Mount Meru will be attempted by the team composed of young experienced climbers.

Wing Commander Devidutta Panda, Former Deputy Principal HMI, Darjeeling and Head of Adventure Wing, Air Force Ashish Mane Five Eight Thousand Mountain Summit Dr Sumeet Mandale, summit of Mount Chyo Oyu, Mount Kanchenjunga, Mount Annapurna and Mount Manda, Krishna Dhokale, summit of Mount Everest and Mount Kanchenjunga, Vivek Shivade, summit of Mount Kanchenjunga, Mount Ama Dablam and Mount Manda, Pawan Hadole, summit of Mount Manda, Varun Bhagwat, an ace rock climber and mountaineer will be part of the climbing team. Akhil Katkar joins the team as Base Camp Manager.
