Outdoor rock climbing with the Castle Mountaineering Club

Go rock climbing with the Castle Mountaineering Club in the Peak District this year in April or May. Meet other climbers, learn more about the Club and learn to progress from the inside to the outside.

These weekends offer potential new members the opportunity to learn more about the Club and to meet other climbers with a range of abilities and ages.

It can be intimidating to go from climbing wall safety to setting up your own equipment, setting up a safe relay, and figuring out which route to take outdoors. Joining a mountaineering club and its members, who have been there before and often have many years of experience, can make this process easier. Members can offer informal counseling, mentoring and rock climbing partners while Club membership grants access to BMC training courses.

Dates and places

1st meeting:

April 12 – Indoor: Awesome Walls, Sheffield, from 6 p.m.

April 14 – Exterior: Birchens, from 10 a.m. (meet in the car park adjacent to the Robin Hood pub).

2nd meeting:

May 10 – Indoor: Awesome Walls, Sheffield, from 6 p.m.

May 12 – Outdoor: Stanage Popular End from 10 a.m.

What do you need

Ideally, you’ll have a minimum of climbing indoors, have your own harness, belay device, helmet and shoes, and can buckle up safely and belay someone competently. However, the club has a few amenities that will be available on both weekends. If in doubt, please contact Andrew (see below).

Who we are

Members of the Castle Mountaineering Club engage in a wide range of activities, including rock climbing, mountaineering, walking, trekking, skiing, ski mountaineering, ski touring, cycling and mountain biking. We are a sociable and supportive group with a lot of combined experience. What unites us is our love of the outdoors, whether it’s the great countryside on our doorstep in the Peak District or adventures beyond.

If you want to join us on one of our weekends, it is important to contact us beforehand, to give us your contact details, in case we need to inform you of a change of location, due to bad weather.
