MasterClass announces Alex Honnold and Tommy Caldwell to teach rock climbing

“Alex and Tommy have 60 years of elite climbing experience, scaling some of the biggest walls in the world, including El Capitan and Fitz Traverse in Patagonia,” said David Rogier, founder and CEO of MasterClass. “Their course is the first time that multiple elements of rock climbing have been taught in one place, and by two of the greatest to ever do so. Members will have access to how they think, how they performed some of their biggest climbs and may even follow closely as they embark on a climb. “

In their class, Honnold and Caldwell will take MasterClass members to an indoor climbing room to demonstrate how to work with a partner to lift the rope with a belay device and climb to the front; they will also cover footwork, grips and arm techniques. The duo will then teach members how to apply the skills they learned indoors in an outdoor environment, starting with bouldering tips and techniques. Honnold will tackle a traditional route, while Caldwell will scale a sport route, each providing insight into their current thoughts and decision-making skills. They will also share the dos and don’ts of exercising, including the importance of responsible climbing and caring for the environment, as well as how not be a “gumby,” the rock climbing community’s cheerful term for a novice. By sharing stories of how they valued and emotionally prepared for the climbing challenges – and teamed up to accomplish the impossible – Honnold and Caldwell will have members who leave this class inspired and ready to face the difficult heights of their time. own life.

“Climbing as a sport has enriched our lives so much, and we would like to share that in a way that can also enrich the lives of MasterClass members,” Caldwell said. “Our class is an overview of all things rock climbing that will give you the tools you need to practice the sport.”

Honnold added, “Tommy and I have spent a fair amount of time and effort polishing our own rock climbing, and we are delighted to teach this course and share our knowledge with anyone who wants to progress as a climber. to be able to contribute to the growth of passions for the sport in this way is a great honor. “

Honnold is a professional adventure climber whose daring free solo climbs of America’s largest cliffs have made him one of the most recognized and followed climbers in the world. A gifted but hardworking athlete, Honnold is known as much for his humble and self-effacing demeanor as for his ability to climb, as evidenced by the profiles of 60 minutes and The New York Times and leading roles in the Emmy nominee Alone on the wall and Oscar-winning documentary Free solo. He hosts the Climbing Gold podcast and is the founder of the Honnold Foundation, an environmental nonprofit dedicated to tackling climate change by promoting solar energy for a fairer world. Honnold is sponsored by The North Face, Black Diamond, The Sportiva, Ando and Stride Health and is a member of the board of directors of El Cap Climbing Gyms. To this day, he maintains his simple existence as a “dirt bag climber”, traveling the world in search of the next great vertical adventure.

Caldwell is an American climber accomplished in Sport Climbing, Traditional Hard Rock Climbing, Large Wall Speed Climbing, and Large Wall Free Climbing. Learned by his father to embrace fear and doubt and turn those feelings into inspiration, Caldwell established some of the toughest routes in the country and freely climbed 12 routes on El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. Regarded by National Geographic in 2015 as “arguably the best all-round climber on the planet,” he believes tough trips with little chance of success have taught him the most. This attitude is no better illustrated than by his first free ascent of the Dawn Wall and his first ascent of the Fitz Traverse in Patagonia.
