Introducing young people to mountaineering: Rajnath

Srinagar, Jun 17 (UNI) Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday urged the Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering & Winter Sports (JIM&WS) to further familiarize people, especially young people, with mountaineering and winter sports in order to instil in them patriotism, courage and energy.

The Defense Minister has inaugurated the Himalayan Museum at JIM&WS in the tourist resort of Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, an official spokesperson has said. He attended the IX Executive Council and the IV General Assembly meeting of JIM&WS in Pahalgam.

Singh also praised the rigorous training standards, excellent management, dedication and technical competence of trainers and instructors that have made JIM&WS one of the leading institutes in the country.

Singh is on a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir.

Attended by Defense Minister and Lieutenant Governor J&K Manoj Sinha, the meeting deliberated on ways to ensure the smooth running of the institute and the timely resolution of outstanding issues, an official spokesperson said.

In his address, Singh praised the rigorous training standards, excellent management, dedication and technical competence of trainers and instructors that have made JIM&WS one of the leading institutes in the country.

He described mountaineering and related activities as a sign not only of physical endurance, but also of mental strength and enthusiasm.

The Raksha Mantri urged the institute to further familiarize people, especially the youth, with mountaineering and winter sports through its various training programs and instill in them patriotism, courage and energy. He said it will not only increase the popularity of these activities but also generate employment opportunities, thus giving a boost to the local economy.

“It will also increase local community involvement and provide an opportunity to connect with their culture,” he added.

Rajnath Singh reiterated the government’s desire to develop border areas to enhance national security and said institutions like JIM&WS can help advance this vision and contribute to the progress of the country.

On this occasion, he also inaugurated a Col KS Mall Boulder climbing wall and a Himalayan museum at the Institute. The aim of JIM&WS is to expose young people to nature and to develop their personality, character and confidence through adventure sports.
