Christy Sports has grown from a single location ski shop in Lakewood, Colorado to a network of over 60 stores in 5 states. For 64 years, it has only offered ski, snowboard and winter boot rentals. Not anymore.
Christy Sports hit the ground running in July with a stellar, easy-on-the-wallet summer gear rental program.
Walk into a Christy Sports in the winter and you can rent skis and poles or, say, buy a new pair of hot molded ski boots and have them fitted on site.
Walk into a Christy Sports store in the spring or summer, and you’ll see what you see in many gear stores: walls and walls of retail items like bikes, skis, backpacks , hydration bladders, jackets and a plethora of outdoor accessories. to satisfy an outdoor adventure.
But come July, walk into a Christy Sports store and you’ll see an entire section dedicated to something new: summer rentals.
What’s available, you might be wondering? Everything from backpacks to child carriers, from weather gear to safety essentials.
We took a short jaunt to Summit County, Colorado, to see what the outdoor traveler has to offer.
Christy Sports Summer Rental
“New season. Same great service,” reads the sign for the mountain town store. If you didn’t already know about Christy’s Hiking and Bike Rentals before you walked in, you did now.
Equipment to be won
Highlights of the shop’s new summer gear rental program are a full hiking package (think backpack, hiking poles, etc.), a full set of clothing, and even things you many outdoor travelers wouldn’t think of packing — like a first-aid kit and bear bell or pepper spray.
Forgot your headlamp? No problem – Christy Sports has thought of that too for early riser and late night adventurers.
Packages and rates
Summer rental packages include:
- Hiking Essentials Package: Backpack, first aid kit, headlamp, trekking poles, bear bell
- Family hiking package: Adult backpack, child backpack, child backpack, headlamp x2, walking sticks x2, first aid kit
- Rainwear set: Raincoat, insulating layer, rain pants
The Hiking Essentials Package is only $40. Or, you can grab a la carte backpacks for $19 for kids and $26 for adults.
A child carrier backpack – let’s be honest – something I’ve rarely seen parents travel with (especially via air travel) is a bargain at $31 a day.
But perhaps the best deal of all is the rainwear package (three layers included) for $20 a day.
And the following à la carte rentals are available:
- Adult backpack rental
- Backpack rental for children
- Baby carrier rental
- Rental of trekking poles
But wait, there’s more! Much like how you can rent or buy skis at a ski shop in the winter, you can in the summer with bikes – including e-bikes – at Christy Sports.
Bike rental options include:
- full suspension mountain bike
- downhill mountain biking
- downhill electric mountain bike
- E-bike path
- path bike
- Children’s downhill mountain bike
- Child bike
- Bike trailer add-on
Bike rentals range in price from $40 to $55 per day for children’s models and $85 to $130 per day for adult models. Thinking of investing in a new bike? What better way to try before you buy than to take a test ride on demo bikes for $115 a day.
Where to rent from Christy Sports
Of the more than 60 Christy Sports sites nationwide, 22 slots across Colorado, Utah and New Mexico kicked off with the summer gear rental program. Most locations offer both hiking and bike rentals, but note that some only offer one category of rentals. Find a store near you (or near your next summer hiking destination).
So far, according to a Christy Sports store manager, the top items have been bicycles and e-bikes, as well as child-carrying hiking backpacks for families.
