JAMMU, Aug 14: Former Union Home Secretary Anil Goswami has flagged a J&K Mountaineering Association team for a mountaineering expedition to Kang Yatse-II Peak (20,500ft) in Ladakh from the Jammu Press Club, here today.
A four-member team comprising three men and one woman will be led by senior mountaineer Sumit Khajuria is participating in the expedition along with other members including Shilpa Charak, Sourav Deep Singh Jamwal and Suhail Mushtaq.
Kang Yatse is an elegant peak that dominates the Markha Valley in Ladakh. The route to its summit is challenging and climbs steeply above base camp over soft snow and loose rocks. The summit offers a glimpse of K2, the second highest peak in the world after Nun, Kun, Nanga Parvat, Saser and Mamostang Kangri. The team hopes to place all members at the top within approximately 12 days.
“If all goes well, the team has a plan ready to attempt another 20,000+ foot summit after the successful ascent of Kang Yatse peak,” Ram Khajuria said.
Ram Khajuria, Senior President of the J&K Mountaineering Association gave a brief account of the activities undertaken by the Association since its inception and thanked the J&K State Sports Council for sponsoring the activities of the Association, especially sponsorship of this mountaineering expedition.
Anil Goswami appreciated the efforts of the Association to undertake a challenging expedition to Kang Yatse. He wished the mountaineers success in the business. As President of Tawi Trekkers J&K, he announced that the club would organize a standard mountaineering expedition themselves next year.
