It’s no secret that hiking is one of the most popular outdoor activities in Alabama. There are many trails located throughout the state that are great for hiking year-round, especially during the winter months. Sure, Alabama might not get a lot of snow during the winter season, but it’s still a great time of year to explore some of the best trails in Yellowhammer State, including the seven listed below.
In these uncertain times, please keep safety in mind and consider adding destinations to your bucket list at a later date.
1. Jericho Walls Trail – Estillfork
Walls of Jericho Alabama Trailhead, Parking Lot, Estillfork, AL 35745, USA
Alabama’s Walls of Jericho Trail, located near the small town of Estillfork, is 6.4 miles round trip. Even though this is one of the hardest trails to hike in the state of Yellowhammer, the waterfall at the end is worth it. Click on here to see the full trail map.
2. Doug Ghee Accessible Trail (Bald Rock Drive) – Delta

One of Alabama’s best and easiest hiking trails is the Doug Ghee Accessible Trail, aka Bald Rock Boardwalk. 3. John B. Scott Forever Wild Trail – Kent
John B. Scott Forever Wild Trail – Trailhead, Gold Mine Rd, Dadeville, AL 36853, USA
Alabama’s John B. Scott Forever Wild Trail with a moderate difficulty rating is a 4.4 mile loop trail located near the small town of Kent, Alabama. This scenic trail follows the Tallapoosa River through a beautifully forested landscape. Click on here to see the full trail map.
4. Borden Creek – Haleyville Hiking Trail

The Borden Creek Hiking Trail in North Alabama, located in the Sipsey Wilderness near Haleyville, is a 4.9 mile round trip trail with a moderate difficulty rating. 5. Walker Bynum Smith Mountain Tower Trail – Dadeville
Smith Mountain Fire Tower, Jacksons’ Gap, AL 36861, USA
The Walker Bynum Smith Mountain Tower Trail, which is located near Dadeville, Alabama, is a 0.7 mile loop trail that ends at a fire tower that overlooks beautiful Lake Martin. 6. Stone Cuts Trail – Huntsville
Stone Cuts Trail, Huntsville, AL 35801, USA
Stone Cuts Trail is a 2.4 mile loop trail located in Monte Sano State Park, northern Alabama. It offers a moderate level of difficulty and offers very nice views of the park and the east side of the Monte Sano mountain. Click on here to see the full trail map.
7. Overlook Trail via Quarry Trail – Birmingham

Overlook Trail in Alabama via Quarry Trail is located in the Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve in Birmingham. It’s 2.8 miles round trip, and it’s also easy enough for all skill levels.
